Impact Factor: outdated artefact or stepping-stone to journal certification?

A review of Garfield's journal impact factor and its specific implementation as the Thomson Reuters Impact Factor reveals several weaknesses in this commonly-used indicator of journal standing. Key limitations include the mismatch between citing and cited documents, the deceptive display of three decimals that belies the real precision, and the absence of confidence intervals. These are minor issues that are easily amended and should be corrected, but more substantive improvements are needed. There are indications that the scientific community seeks and needs better certification of journal procedures to improve the quality of published science. Right ventricular thrombus with Behçet's syndrome successful treatment with warfarin and immunosuppressive agents

Behçet's syndrome is a chronic multisystem disease that presents with recurrent oral and genital ulceration and recurrent uveitis. Cardiac involvement is an extremely rare manifestation of this disorder. A 33-year-old man with Behçet's syndrome was admitted to our department with a history of cough, fever, chest pain, hemoptysis, and weight loss. Transthoracic and transesophageal echocardiography revealed a right ventricular thrombus. After 1 month of treatment with warfarin, cyclophosphamide, and corticosteroid, the intracardiac thrombus resolved. © 2007 by the Texas Heart® Institute

A Statement on Ethics from the HEART Group

Over the past several years, the editors of leading international cardiovascular journals have met to form the HEART group and to discuss areas of growing, common interest. Recently, the HEART group has developed a document that addresses general ethical principles in the conduct of the scientific process with which all of the editors concur. Published essentially simultaneously in all of the participating journals, including this journal, this document presents the ethical tenets accepted by all of the undersigned editors that will (continue to) guide their decisions in the editorial process. These are the general principles on which the HEART Group is based and by which we, as a group, abide; however, please note that individual journal members and their respective societies may have their own rules and regulations that supersede the guidelines of the HEART Group

Stress neuropeptide levels in adults with chest pain due to coronary artery disease: potential implications for clinical assessment

: Substance P (SP) and neuropeptide Y (NPY) are neuropeptides involved in nociception. The study of biochemical markers of pain in communicating critically ill coronary patients may provide insight for pain assessment and management in critical care. Purpose of the study was to to explore potential associations between plasma neuropeptide levels and reported pain intensity in coronary critical care adults, in order to test the reliability of SP measurements for objective pain assessment in critical care
